Clinical Tools for the Treatment of Atrophic Maxillae: PRGF, Short Implants, and Narrow Implants
The treatment of atrophic jaws is always a challenge both for surgeons and prosthodontists. Dentists are increasingly faced with patients with horizontal, vertical or mixed bone atrophies that require different approaches in order to be rehabilitated using dental implants.
Due to the search for therapeutic options with less patient morbidity and fewer surgeries, the use of shorter and narrower implants is increasing. This presentation will show a less invasive therapeutic approach that is also based on long-term scientific evidence.
Immediate Post-Extraction Implant Placement
Placing an implant at the same time as the tooth extraction offers multiple advantages: it reduces the number of surgical interventions, allows the implant to be positioned exactly where the extracted tooth was, preserves the soft tissue and enables a prosthetic restoration with a very good aesthetic result. Where immediate loading is performed, the aesthetic deficit is resolved immediately and very conveniently.
The technique also carries risks and limitations: a higher implant failure rate, the need for bone and soft tissue augmentation, difficulties in placing the implant in multi-rooted teeth, and provisional restorations that are at times difficult to achieve. Immediate post-extraction implant placement remains the treatment of choice in selected clinical situations.
